In Memoriam: Professor Thierry Chopin

Tribute to Professor Thierry Chopin, by Dr. Philippe Potin, scientific director of the Global Seaweed Coalition.

Throughout his career, Thierry was known for his enthusiasm, charisma, and sense of humor, leaving a lasting impact on the scientific community and aquaculture practitioners. He was instrumental in popularizing the concept of Integrated Multi-trophic aquaculture, which he co-founded in 2003 alongside esteemed colleagues. Thierry’s commitment to science was evident in his advocacy for the potential of seaweeds for the planet, as well as his critical stance against the hype surrounding them. Thierry’s involvement with the Global Seaweed Coalition and his contributions to the Coalition’s scientific council showcased his dedication to advancing seaweed research and sustainable practices. His sudden passing shortly after retirement has left a significant void in the community.

As we remember Thierry, we honor his legacy by continuing his achievements and working in the spirit he fostered throughout his career. Let us be inspired by the concepts he developed and strive to be science-grounded in the advancement of the seaweed sector. The most important thing we have to do to honor the memory of Thierry is to work in the spirit he developed during his service, being truly science-grounded in the development of the seaweed sector, and inspired by all the concepts he contributed to during his career. Rest in peace, Professor Chopin !
