Adelaide hosts Asia-Pacific Seagriculture 2025 event

International seaweed farmers, processors, researchers, suppliers and policymakers will come together in Adelaide in March 2025 for the first in-person Seagriculture Asia-Pacific Conference.

As seaweed farming has expanded in the Northern Hemisphere, Seagriculture Europe has established itself as a valuable industry event since it was first held in 2012.

The Asia-Pacific region has dominated seaweed production and use internationally for decades and has a rich history deeply intertwined with the cultivation and use of this marine resource.

Seagriculture Asia-Pacific was first held in 2023, to share knowledge ranging from traditional seaweed

farming methods to state-of-the-art technology to facilitate the growth of production and market opportunities.

More than 180 delegates from 31 countries took part in the two-day online event.

In 2025, Seagriculture Asia-Pacific will become an in-person event, held from 19 to 20 March at the Adelaide Convention Centre, South Australia. A pre-conference tour of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), which leads much of the state's seaweed research, has also been organised on 18 March.

The Seagriculture Asia-Pacific Conference website highlights the anticipated growth of the Asia-Pacific commercial seaweed market, forecast to be worth nearly $US16 billion by 2029. Australia hopes to be part of this growing market. Private and government investment in research and development is driving fast-growth for Australia's commercial seaweed industry.

The peak body for Australia's emerging seaweed sector, the Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance (ASSA) is a key supporter of the 2025 conference, which is organised by DLG Benelux via its event partner Hannover Fairs Australia.

ASSA’s mission is to scale up environmentally responsible commercial farming of seaweed to provide food, feed and bioproducts. ASSA provides a coordinated voice to represent the Australian seaweed industry and to drive sustainable growth of the sector right across the country.

As part of the launch of Transformations for a Sustainable Ocean Economy in December 2020, the Australian Government has flagged the acceleration of seaweed aquaculture as a priority for the country’s ongoing economic plan, and progress has continued.

ASSA CEO Lindsay Hermes says the organisation hopes to leverage the conference as an opportunity

to drive forward the high-tech, high-growth and highly sustainable Australian seaweed industry.

The Government of South Australia, along with its Team Adelaide partners Business Events Adelaide and Adelaide Convention Centre, are sponsors of Seagriculture Asia-Pacific 2025.
