Seaturns Closes €2.45M Round to Propel Wave Energy to Market

By Blue Economy Insights

French wave energy developer Seaturns has raised €2.45 million to support the industrial rollout and deployment of its innovative wave energy technology. The successful fundraising campaign attracted backing from 1,543 investors on the sustainable finance platform LITA.co, alongside strategic contributions from long-time partners including Team for the Planet, Sébastien Duez, and Lawrence Sigaud, who will join the company as Deputy CEO.

“This support is crucial to deploy our full-scale demonstrator from the summer of 2025 and accelerate our industrial development,” said Vincent Tournerie, Founding President of Seaturns.

The funds will enable the installation of a scale-1 wave energy converter (WEC) at the SEM-REV offshore test site, managed by the OPEN-C Foundation, and mark a major step toward industrial-scale production. In addition to technical deployment, the capital will support Seaturns’ global commercialization strategy.

Proven at Sea, Ready for Scale

The announcement follows 18 months of successful sea trials at Ifremer, where Seaturns’ technology demonstrated strong performance and structural resilience. The device was tested for its ability to deliver consistent, decarbonized electricity generation and its potential to contribute meaningfully to Europe’s renewable energy mix.

Designed with affordability and simplicity at its core, the Seaturns WEC aims to lower production and operating costs compared to legacy wave energy technologies. Its architecture focuses on cost-efficient offshore installation, ease of maintenance, and reduced environmental impact.

How It Works

The Seaturns system captures energy from the motion of ocean waves using a cylindrical converter that floats on the surface and is anchored by a patented system. This anchoring allows the WEC to convert horizontal wave movement into a pitching motion, powering an internal water pendulum and air chambers that generate airflow. This airflow turns a turbine connected to an alternator, producing clean electricity.

The upcoming deployment at SEM-REV will mark the first full-scale demonstration of this system. The site provides robust subsea infrastructure, environmental monitoring tools, and engineering support to de-risk both technical and ecological aspects before market introduction.

Pushing Toward Commercial Wave Energy

Seaturns launched the funding round in April 2025 to scale its technology after several years of R&D. In June, the company formalized its agreement with the OPEN-C Foundation to deploy the demonstrator off the coast of Le Croisic, with installation scheduled for summer 2025.

As wave energy moves closer to commercial viability, Seaturns represents a growing class of next-generation developers focused on cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally conscious ocean energy solutions.
